Why is my tarantula on it's back?
When a tarantula molts (sheds it's exuvium) it will lie on it's back belly up in order to do so. Although it has been observed many times that a tarantula will molt without turning over.
Why has my tarantula stopped eating?
Generally it is because they are getting near to their next molt, when a tarantula is nearing it's time to molt it will often stop eating, the amount of time varies depending on the species and size of the tarantula.
I am going away on holiday, will my tarantula be okay?
Tarantulas can go for long periods of time without food, up to a couple of months even. However they do need water so if you are leaving for a few days ensure that you have someone who will be able to provide them with water while you are away.
How long will my tarantula live?
It depends on the species of tarantula, but a rough estimate would be between 10 to 15 years.
Can I handle my tarantula?
Some species of tarantula are docile and easy to handle, other species can be skittish and aggresive. However we do not recommend handling tarantulas, if they fall it can be fatal for the tarantula.
If it bites me will I die?
No. Tarantula venom is mild and there is no record of anyone dying from a tarantulas venom. However it is important to have the bite wound treated to avoid serious infection.
Are they legal in S.A?
Yes they are, however it is illegal to keep indigenous South African species, please DO NOT take our South African tarantulas out of the wild!
